If you want to be in a December show, this is the week you have to move. Holiday casting season on the Wasatch Front peaks between September 8 and 12, and three theaters are casting right now. Two of them audition tomorrow night.
Here is what is open, what each theater actually asks for, and what they have not said yet.
A Christmas Story: The Musical — SCERA, Orem
Tuesday, September 8 or Wednesday, September 9, 7:00–9:00 PM. By appointment.
SCERA Center for the Arts, 745 South State, Orem
- Ages 9 to adult. All roles are open.
- Prepare 32 bars of a musical theatre song in the style of the show. An aux cord is available for backing tracks.
- Registration is required in advance through Casting Manager — you pick your slot there.
- Can’t make either night? SCERA accepts a video submission by YouTube link through the same Casting Manager listing.
- Callbacks: Saturday, September 19, including a dance and movement section.
- Rehearsals begin September 28, weekday evenings 7–10 PM plus some Saturdays. This is a single-cast production, and no conflicts are accepted after November 27.
- Performances: December 4–19, Mondays and Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 PM.

Annie — Hopebox Theatre, Kaysville

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol — Beverly’s Terrace Plaza Playhouse, Ogden

You will see September 12 on audition round-up lists as though you can turn up and sing. You cannot. Terrace Plaza casts its entire season by video submission through Master Cast Pro, and September 12 is the deadline to have yours uploaded. Miss it by a day and there is nothing to walk into.

Two things worth doing before Tuesday
Pick 32 bars that go somewhere. Thirty-two bars is roughly a minute — the length of a chorus, not a whole song. The cut that works is not the one with your highest note in it. It is the one where the character changes their mind. Start a few bars before that turn so the panel watches you decide something, and end on the decision. A gorgeous minute in which nothing happens is a forgettable minute.
If you are filming, light your face and not your ceiling. A window in front of you beats every lamp in the house. Frame yourself from roughly the waist up so your hands are in shot, record the sound in the same room rather than dubbing it later, and do not edit between phrases — a cut in the middle of a line reads as a fix. One honest take is worth more than a polished assembly of five.
How we check these
Every listing above was read off the theater’s own website the morning this was published, not copied from an aggregator. That matters more than it sounds like it should. Round-up lists routinely print a video-submission deadline as though it were an audition date, and in the past month we have found listings for auditions that did not exist at all. Two more were on this week’s community sheet and are not in this post, because the venues do not have them.
Details do change after a page goes up. If something here does not match what the theater says, the theater is right — and we would like to know, so we can fix it.
Why a foundation posts audition listings
Gene C. McCombs taught speech and theatrical arts at Granite High School in South Salt Lake for about thirty years. Thousands of Utah students came through that classroom, and a good number of them found out what they could do because somebody told them an audition was happening and that they should go.
That is most of what this list is. The rest of what the foundation does follows from the same idea: we fund the Gene C. McCombs Memorial Scholarship for Utah seniors, we make grants to schools, districts, community theaters and nonprofits running theater, speech and debate programs across the state, and we back the Wasatch Front theaters working to open their doors wider.
If your program could use funding, the letter of inquiry takes about ten minutes and the board reviews them quarterly. If you would like to help pay for any of it, there are two ways to give and they do different jobs.
And if you are a student reading this at eleven o’clock at night, talking yourself out of Tuesday: go. The worst outcome is that you sing for two minutes in front of people who like musicals.
